Health Testing

✨ The Truth About OFA & PennHIP Testing ✨

While OFA and PennHIP are valuable tools in responsible breeding, it’s important for buyers to understand what these tests really mean and what they don’t. Many families looking for a puppy hear about OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) or PennHIP testing and assume that passing results guarantee their puppy will never have hip problems. Unfortunately, that’s a bit of a false sense of security.

✅ What they do:

  • Measure hip structure and laxity (looseness) in breeding dogs.

  • Help breeders make more informed decisions to reduce the risk of passing on severe hip dysplasia.

⚠️ What they don’t do:

  • Guarantee that a puppy will never develop hip dysplasia or joint issues.

  • Eliminate the role of environment, growth, diet, or exercise in how hips develop.

  • Predict every possible genetic or structural issue.

The truth is, hip health is influenced by a combination of genetics and lifestyle. Even puppies from parents with excellent OFA or PennHIP scores can develop issues if they’re overfed, allowed to become overweight, over-exercised on hard surfaces, or have bad luck in how their body develops.

That’s why relying solely on “passing” OFA or PennHIP results can give buyers a false sense of security.

The best approach is a combination of:

  • Thoughtful, health-conscious breeding practices.

  • Proper puppy raising and growth management.

  • Lifelong care to maintain a healthy weight and joint support.

In other words: testing is just one piece of the puzzle, not the full picture. 🐾
